The Competence Center Energy and Mobility (CCEM) closes the gap in energy research between fundamental research and industry and contributes towards the development of a sustainable energy system. Based at PSI, CCEM cooperates with institutions and research teams from the whole of the ETH Domain, with a range of different universities and with CSEM.
The core importance of energy as a field of research is underlined by the necessity to secure access to affordable and clean energy not only now but in the future too. Energy research is also essential around the globe in order to boost innovation and the ability to compete. CCEM therefore does everything in its power to advance research work in the areas of energy efficiency, supply, conversion and transmission. The aim is to reduce emissions of harmful substances and CO2 and to scale back dependency on fossil fuels by using renewable energies. Focal areas of research are therefore electric power, mobility, heat, buildings and renewable fuels.
At project level, CCEM works very closely with PSI’s two energy research departments and with various teams from ETH Zurich, EPFL and Empa. Eawag and WSL are also involved in some projects. Since 2009, the ETH Domain’s sustainability initiative, Novatlantis, has also been affiliated to CCEM. Within the CCEM framework, Novatlantis will concentrate on push-pull projects to facilitate knowledge and technology transfer between academia and industry, and between federal and cantonal authorities.
